THE LIVING HEART OF OUR SCHOLARLY SOCIETY
At the heart of the SGEM WORLD SCIENCE (SWS) Scholarly Society are our international scientific events — places where research becomes dialogue, disciplines meet, and new ideas begin.
For more than 25 years, our conferences and scientific sessions have brought together researchers, academics, professionals and artists from around the world. They are more than dates on an academic calendar. They create opportunities to present research, question it, discuss it, develop it and build collaborations that continue beyond the conference itself.
Scholarly publications preserve and disseminate knowledge. Scientific events add something uniquely immediate: people exchanging ideas in real time.
01The events of the SWS Scholarly Society are intentionally multidisciplinary.Our scholarly world extends from geosciences, engineering, environmental research and emerging technologies to social sciences, humanities, architecture, culture and the arts.
We value specialised expertise, but we also believe that many important questions cannot be understood through one discipline alone.
A scientist and an artist may approach the same reality through completely different languages. An engineer and a social scientist may recognise different consequences of the same technology. When these perspectives meet, new ways of understanding can emerge.
This interaction between disciplines is one of the defining ideas of the SWS Scholarly Society.
02Scientific quality remains fundamental to every SWS event.Conference contributions follow structured evaluation and peer-review processes involving qualified reviewers, editors and scientific committees. Accepted research may proceed through editorial and production workflows into conference proceedings and other scholarly publications.
Depending on the publication series and year, SWS Scholarly Society proceedings and publications are submitted to and disseminated through major international academic databases and discovery services, including Scopus and other Elsevier databases, Clarivate Analytics databases, EBSCO, ProQuest and other scholarly information platforms.
Coverage varies between publication series, databases and years.
But scholarly quality begins before indexing — with how research is evaluated, discussed, improved and shared.
03The SGEM International Scientific GeoConference is our flagship scientific event in Earth and planetary sciences, engineering, environmental research and related STEM fields.Its programme brings together areas including geology, geodesy, mining and mineral resources, water, energy, environmental sciences, green technologies, advanced engineering and emerging technological applications.
It creates a meeting point between fundamental knowledge of our planet and the technologies required to understand, protect and manage it responsibly.
05At Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, WSMA — When Science Meets Art gives one of our central ideas its clearest expression.Science seeks evidence, structure and explanation.
Art seeks expression, interpretation and experience.
Yet both begin with curiosity.
WSMA creates a space where scientists, artists, architects, musicians, philosophers, engineers and creative professionals can meet across disciplines.
The objective is not to erase the difference between science and art, but to allow them to challenge, inspire and enrich one another.
06Vienna GREEN & BolognaThe SWS Vienna GREEN Sessions focus on major environmental and technological challenges — from water, forests and climate to energy, recycling, biotechnology, green buildings and sustainable design.Their central question is simple: How can knowledge contribute to a more sustainable future?
In Italy, The Renaissance Reimagined carries the interdisciplinary SWS philosophy into Bologna, exploring what a contemporary renaissance of science, culture, creativity and ideas might look like today.
Different settings, different disciplines — but one shared principle: knowledge becomes more powerful when disciplines are allowed to meet.
07From the Black Sea coast to Vienna and Italy, and through international virtual participation, events of the SWS Scholarly Society connect scientists, researchers, educators, professionals, artists and thinkers from a community representing more than 80 countries.A programme records the official sessions.
A proceedings volume preserves the scholarly contribution.
But some of the most valuable outcomes happen between them:
a question after a presentation;
an unexpected conversation;
a new interdisciplinary connection;
a collaboration that begins between sessions;
a familiar problem suddenly seen from another perspective.
This is why our events remain the living heart of the SWS Scholarly Society.
They are places where knowledge is not simply presented.
